Miraculous Fabric Helps Protect Against Skin Cancer

With summer on the horizon, many women are preparing for this outdoor season by getting into shape, stocking up on sunscreen, and finding that perfect bathing suit. However, for women with various health challenges, enjoying the great outdoors while fulfilling the Biblical commandment to take care of one’s health can be a challenge.

“For women with health issues, finding the right swimwear involves more than just a fashion preference,” explained Daniella Teutsch, co-founder of HydroChic, an Israel and USA based company which produces fashionable health-protective swimwear and athletic wear, to Breaking Israel News. “Women need to find something which flatters their bodies while protecting their dignity and providing maximum protection from the sun.”

Statistically, one in five Americans are expected to develop some form of skin cancer during their lifetime. The safest defense against skin cancer is to cover up when out in the sun. Wearing tops and bottoms made of fabric which provides UPF 50+ protection along with a hat helps prevent skin damage.

“We originally developed HydroChic in order to provide stylish, modest swimwear and activewear for women who wanted to feel comfortable and covered, while looking fashionable,” continued Teutsch. “Then, it came to our attention that many women require sun protection in order not to aggravate certain chronic health conditions. This lead to a concerted effort to design tops with longer sleeves and higher necks as well as skirts that were longer so that these women could protect their health while enjoying the water and outdoors.”

Other ailments for which individuals need to restrict their sun exposure include cancer, Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, and various skin disorders.

Cancer patients, who have gone through chemotherapy, are particularly vulnerable to the dangers of the sun. Yet fresh air and exercise can be beneficial to their healing. Survivors have noted that wearing HydroChic’s breathable, UPF50+ sun protective  full coverage ensembles helps them feel freer to safely partake in outdoor activities both in and out of the water.

Out of the more than 5 million people suffering from Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, the vast majority are women. This condition is commonly accompanied by photosensitivity, which means sunlight will yield unusually strong reactions in the form of rashes or flare ups of painful lupus symptoms. These include fever, joint pain and inflammation. Lupus patients report that proper coverage against the sun eases their symptoms.

In addition, there are a number of skin disorders, such as rosacea, that increase the sufferer’s level of photosensitivity. Sun protective outdoor-wear helps combat the harmful effects of direct sunlight by limiting skin exposure.

The fabric’s durability is also beneficial to women with health problems. For example, it is recommended that people suffering from arthritis swim regularly in order to keep joints nimble while not adding strain on the body. However, regular exercise in chlorinated water takes a toll on standard swimsuit fabrics, forcing active swimmers to replace their swimwear usually every three months. HydroChic’s unique Chlorine-Proof line of swimwear is built to withstand the effects of chlorine-induced deterioration, making them last far longer than traditional swimsuits.

Teutsch noted to Breaking Israel News that being proactive in one’s health is actually a Biblical commandment. In addition to quoting from Deuteronomy 4:9, “Only take heed to thyself, and keep thy soul diligently”, which rabbis explain is a commandment to guard one’s health, she also pointed out that Rabbi Moses ben Maimon, a major medieval rabbi, scholar and doctor, wrote, “A person must avoid anything that may harm the body, and must cultivate healthy habits.”

“Therefore, even a person who does not suffer from a condition that heightens her vulnerability to the sun, should minimize direct sun exposure. Wearing swimsuits designed to deflect UV rays is a sure way to prevent developing skin-related health issues down the road,” said Teutsch. “It is easy to ignore a threat when it isn’t immediate, but it is an undeniable truth that the sun exposure we receive now will likely surface in the form of wrinkles, moles, premature aging and even serious skin disorders in the future.”
