Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced on Saturday that he will testify before the Senate Intelligence Committee concerning the ongoing investigation surrounding former FBI Director James Comey and the last presidential election. His decision comes as a result of testimony given by last week by Comey that Sessions may have more links to Russia than was previously believed.

Sessions wrote a letter to Senator Richard Shelby, chairman of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies, explaining that he will be unable to appear before his committee as planned on Tuesday to discuss the Department of Justice budget. He will instead be appearing before the Senate Committee investigating the last presidential election.

“In light of reports regarding Mr. Comey’s recent testimony before the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, it is important that I have an opportunity to address these matters in the appropriate forum,” Sessions said.

On Thursday, Comey testified to the senate committee that President Donald Trump fired him in May in an attempt to undermine his investigation into Russian efforts to influence the 2016 presidential election. Comey testified that in a meeting before his dismissal, Trump demanded a pledge of loyalty and that he drop the investigation into a Trump senior aide, national security adviser Michael Flynn.

During his Senate confirmation hearing in January, Sessions testified that he had not met with Russians during the presidential campaign. In March, he recused himself from the investigation after admitting that he had met with the Russian ambassador twice last year.
