The sanctity of the Western Wall, or Kotel, was violated on Sunday when a 23-year-old woman removed her clothes and attempted to enter the men’s prayer section naked.

In an immodest video of the event, the young woman is seen walking out of the women’s section without her clothes and continuing across the Western Wall plaza. Two women are visible chasing her and attempting to cover her with scarves, but after shaking them off she runs into the men’s section. A few seconds later two security personnel, holding covers over the woman’s body, hurriedly usher her out of the plaza.

A distraught woman is heard crying out on the video, “Get her! Bring the police! This is a modest place!” as the streaker walks across the plaza, and many yells and screams are audible in the background as other visitors watch in bewilderment.

Witnesses said she seemed determined to “provoke” a reaction with her actions, though no specific agenda was clear.

“She came in clothed and at some stage took off her clothes. She seemed to be determined, as if she wanted to cause a provocation,” one eyewitness told Israeli TV news Channel 2.

“People started to scream and cry and when she started moving toward the men’s section she was stopped by force.”

The naked woman, who is Israeli, was brought to a police station, where she was questioned. Police said she was taken for a psychological evaluation. According to her parents, the woman suffered from mental health issues.

The Western Wall is one of the holiest and most sacred sites for the Jewish people. Women are not permitted to enter with their shoulders uncovered. Large signs are visible in the plaza requesting that worshipers respect the sanctity and modesty of the site.
