An 18-year old Morrocan who came to Finland in 2016 seeking asylum went on a stabbing spree on Friday afternoon, killing two women and wounding eight people the city of Turku, about 90 miles west of the capital, Helsinki.
“The act had been investigated as murder, but during the night we received additional information which indicates that the criminal offenses are now terrorist killings,” police said in a statement.
Police stopped the assailant by shooting him in the leg before arresting him.
“We think that the attacker especially targeted women, and the men were wounded after coming to the defense of the women,” superintendent Christa Granroth of Finland’s National Bureau of Investigation told reporters. Of the injured, six were women.
Five other Moroccan citizens were arrested over potential links to the attack. The city has a large immigrant population.
The attack in Finland comes one day after 13 people were killed and approximately 100 injured in two ramming attacks in Barcelona committed by Morrocans.
