Travel between India and Israel is on the rise in the aftermath of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s historic visit to the Jewish state in July, according to the Israeli Tourism Ministry.

Modi was the first sitting Indian prime minister to visit Israel.

“We want to leverage the renewed interest sparked by the Indian prime minister’s visit to increase destination awareness among Indian travelers,” Israeli Tourism Ministry Director Hassan Madah told reporters in India this week.

Madah and a Tourism Ministry delegation are taking part in a six-city roadshow in India, which began in Mumbai Aug. 21 and ended in Chennai.

Some 34,000 Indians visited the Jewish state during the past seven months—a 36-percent increase compared to the same period in 2016. The Israeli Tourism Ministry anticipates that around 55,000 Indian tourists will visit Israel this year.

In June, the Israeli government approved a number of measures that deepen ties with India in the fields of water, agriculture, innovation, tourism and defense.

According to Madah, the Tourism Ministry is in discussions with Indian travel companies to coordinate “defense” tourism to Israel.

“There are many tourists…who are interested to learn how people defend themselves and things about warfare…because the reputation of Israeli security is very high,” said Madah, adding, “We are exploring all angles with travel agents in India.”
