Jewish children in the U.S. have created a new video campaign on social media, with the non-profit organization Nevet, urging Americans to assist with feeding disadvantaged Israeli schoolchildren.

The one-and-a-half-minute video, launched last week, features young American students discussing their favorite meals to eat for breakfast before going to school, and then details the difficulties faced by Israeli schoolchildren who arrive at school hungry.

“At Nevet, we take care of these children by providing them with a nutritional sandwich every day,” Ariella Shoham, a Nevet volunteer, states in the video. “Each morning we deliver fresh sandwiches to 8,000 Israeli students at 130 schools throughout Israel.”

Shoham says the sandwiches help the Israeli students focus on their studies throughout the day, “feeding their minds.” Nevet cites research published in 2013 in the Frontiers in Human Neuroscience journal, which found that eating breakfast has a positive effect on children’s ability to learn.

About 13,500 Israeli children lack proper daily nutrition and would benefit from the sandwich deliveries, according to Nevet.

“Unfortunately, many students from disadvantaged or dysfunctional backgrounds come to school hungry and empty-handed—and that’s where Nevet steps in,” said Rotem Yosef, the organization’s vice president of strategic development.
