On Thursday, the Syria Foreign Ministry presented a letter of complaint to the UN Security Council demanding they condemn an alleged Israeli airstrike against a Syrian military laboratory. The letter called to condemn Israel’s  “repeated aggressions on the country” and “take an immediate and decisive measure to halt them in accordance with its resolutions related to combating terrorism”.

“The repeated Israeli attacks have become systematic behavior with the aim of protecting Jabhat al-Nusra and ISIS terrorists,” the foreign ministry’s letter read.

The Syrian Army claimed on Thursday morning that the Israeli Air Force carried out an air strike overnight against a Syrian Scientific Studies and Research Center (CERS), which is responsible for research and development of nuclear, biological, chemical and missile technology and weapons for the military in Western Syria. It is the site that produces chemical weapons and barrel bombs. Former Israeli military and intelligence officials said the weapons were possibly intended for the Lebanese terror group Hezbollah.

“Israeli warplanes fired several rockets from the Lebanese airspace at 02:42 a.m. on Thursday targeting one of the Syrian military posts near Massyaf, killing two army personnel and causing material damage to the site,” it said in a statement carried by the official Syrian Arab News Agency.

“This belligerence is a brazen attempt to raise the morale of the terror organization ISIS, which finds itself in a state of collapse after crushing victories by the Syrian army against the terror on more than one front,” the army statement continued. “The aggressive Israeli attack could have dangerous consequences on stability and security in the region.”

According to some reports, the missiles were fired from within Lebanese airspace and not from inside Syria where Russian and US-led coalition aircraft are active.

On Friday, the Lebanese President’s office said in a statement that the Supreme Defense Council had ordered Foreign Minister Jibran Bassil to lodge an official complaint against Israel with the UN Security Council for crossing over Lebanese airspace when en route to carry out the airstrike against Syria.
On Wednesday, a report by a UN war crimes commission said it had clear evidence that the regime of Syrian President Bashar al Assad was responsible for a Sarin gas attack in April at the city of Khan Sheikhoun that killed dozens of civilians.
