Palestinian Adversaries Hamas, Fatah Set to Form Unity Government

Ismail Haniyeh, the top leader of Gaza-ruling terror group Hamas, announced Monday that his organization is prepared to form a unity government with Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas’s Fatah party, without preconditions.

Hamas is ready “to hold a dialogue with Fatah in Cairo immediately, to come to an agreement and set the terms for its implementation,” said Haniyeh in a statement published on the terror group’s official website.

Haniyeh made the announcement from Cairo after arriving in Egypt Saturday in his first trip outside of the coastal territory since being selected to his new leadership post for Hamas in May.

During his visit to Cairo, Haniyeh also reportedly took part in various meetings with Egyptian security officials. Senior Hamas members based outside of Gaza were also part of the terror group’s delegation, including Moussa Abu Marzouk and arch-terrorist Saleh al-Arouri.

Haniyeh’s statement follows the recently resolved energy crisis in Gaza, precipitated by the PA’s June decision to pay only 60 percent of the coastal territory’s monthly electricity bill, amidst an ongoing feud with Hamas.

A Palestinian unity government was formed in 2014 between Hamas and Fatah, but ended in 2015 after making little progress to reconcile the deep split between the two Palestinian factions — a rift that has divided the Palestinians since Hamas violently took control of Gaza in 2007.
