IDF Tanks Respond to Rocket in Golan While Iran Warns Israel About “Violating” Syria

A rocket fired from Syria crossed into the Golan on Thursday landed in an open field.  No damage or injuries were reported. It is believed that the incident was spillover from ongoing hostilities between forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar al Assad and rebel troops.

The early-warning siren did not sound in response to the launch because the detection system determined that the projectile would not land in a populated area.

IDF tanks responded, destroying a military target in Syria that was identified as the source of the hostile fire. No Syrian casualties were reported.

On Wednesday,  sirens warning of Syrian rocket-fire went off twice in the Golan but no explosions were detected and the IDF was unable to determine where the rockets landed. It is believed the warning system detected rocket fire that remained inside Syria.

Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman responded to the increasing hostilities on Israel’s northern border.

“The Iranians are trying to take control of Syria to become the dominant power there,” he said.

Though Israel is not involved in the ongoing civil war in Syria, it is feared that the complex multinational aspect of the situation can explode and become focused on Israel. This possibility was made clear on Wednesday when  Iran’s military chief of staff, Maj.-Gen. Mohammad Bagheri told the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), the official news agency of Iran, “It is not acceptable for the Zionist regime to violate Syria anytime it wants”.
