Australia experienced a 9.5-percent increase in anti-Semitic attacks and assaults from September 2016 to September 2017, according to a new report released by the Executive Council of Australian Jewry.

A total of 230 anti-Semitic incidents were recorded during that period, with 76 involving abuse, harassment or intimidation.

Fifty-five instances of anti-Semitic graffiti were also recorded, as well as 59 incidents involving the dissemination of anti-Jewish propaganda such as pamphlets, posters and stickers.

The report includes examples of threatening emails used against Jewish organizations and individuals.

The rise in anti-Semitism occurred against the backdrop of a significant increase in extreme right-wing activism in Australia during the past year.

Meanwhile, left-wing anti-Semitism was usually presented as “anti-Zionist or anti-Israel” activity, according to the report.

In October 2016, the neo-Nazi group Antipodean Resistance was formed in Melbourne and spread to other Australian cities. The group has distributed anti-Semitic propaganda such as posters calling to “legalize the execution of Jews.”
