Evangelical Christians Celebrate Trump’s Recognition of Jerusalem as Capital, US Embassy Move

Evangelical Christian organizations joyously commended President Donald Trump on fulfilling his campaign promise to recognize Jerusalem as the eternal capital of the State of Israel, a promise which inspired much of his pro-Israel, Evangelical voter base.

The The International Christian Embassy Jerusalem (ICEJ), Proclaiming Justice to The Nations (PJTN), and UN Special Envoy to the World Council of Independent Christian Churches (WCICC) were among the the many organizations which released statements congratulating Trump and celebrating Trump’s Wednesday declaration.

Christian groups have actively lobbied the administration to recognize Jerusalem and move the US Embassy to the capital city, efforts many believe were crucial to Trump’s decision.

“We wholeheartedly welcome today’s courageous landmark decision by the United States to finally recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel,” said ICEJ President Dr. Jürgen Bühler in a statement.

“This is a long overdue step which goes to the core of the historic national identity of the Jewish people.”

Bühler continued, “Jerusalem holds great historical and religious significance for billions of people of faith all around the world, and as Christians we have to acknowledge that it all began with the Jewish people and their deep spiritual attachment to this city.”

President of PJTN Laurie Cordoza Moore lauded the move as one of the most “Biblically historic initiatives” of Trump’s presidency.

Christian support for Israel has deeply Biblical underpinnings – the Bible proclaims that those who bless Israel will in turn be blessed, and thus the job of awakening the will of God is not limited to the Jewish people.

I will bless those who bless you And curse him that curses you; And all the families of the earth Shall bless themselves by you. Genesis 12:3

“Like many Jews in Israel and around the world, Christians recognize the Jews’ Biblical connection through King David’s establishment of Jerusalem as the capital of ancient Israel and the location for both the first and second Temples,” said Moore. Referencing the prophets Ezekiel and Isaiah, she stated that “all Israel awaits the rebuilding of the Third Temple.”

Christianity, like Judaism, believes that the Messiah will one day sit on the throne of David in Jerusalem. As such, over the last several years, Evangelical Christians, including the president’s conservative Christian advisers who regularly advocated for the move at White House meetings, have led an intense push that helped set the stage for Trump’s historical decision to move the embassy.

A group chaired by former Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee launched an email campaign for its 25 million constituents as the deadline for Trump to sign the waiver approached while another evangelical group, American Christian Leaders for Israel, sent a letter on November 27 to Trump expressing concern that “every passing day it will become more difficult to move the embassy and if you do not do it now, it may never happen.”

Johnnie Moore, a California pastor who serves as a spokesman for a council of leading evangelicals that advises the White House, said in Jerusalem Post interview, “I have no doubt that Evangelicals played a meaningful role in this decision. I don’t believe it would have happened without them.”

Bühler emphasized this point in his statement, saying, “The Christian Embassy has been at the forefront of Christian efforts to convince the community of nations to grant full diplomatic recognition to Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.”

He concluded, “We are now hopeful other nations will quickly follow the bold lead of US President Donald Trump and move their embassies to this extraordinary city. Surely, the time has come to end the wholly undeserved diplomatic snubbing of Jerusalem.”
