A young Jewish boy fell from a fourth-story window and was declared brain-dead, but his kidney went on the save another boy’s life.  The fact that the other boy is Palestinian did not deter the parents from giving this precious gift.

Four-year-old Noam Naor fell from his apartment window and was rushed in critical condition to the Chaim Sheba Medical Centre at Tel Hashomer, but doctors determined his injuries were so severe he could not be saved.  After consulting rabbinic authorities, the boy’s parents agreed to donate his kidneys.  Because he was so small, only another child could benefit from such a life-saving transplant.  When the organ donor list was checked for a suitable recipient, only one match turned up: a ten-year-old Palestinian boy, suffering from kidney failure for the past seven years in Jerusalem.  Yakoub Ibhisad was being treated at Shaare Tzedek Medical Centre.  None of his family members was a suitable match.

Since Yakoub is not Israeli, Noam’s parents were again consulted to confirm that they were willing to donate to a non-Israeli recipient.  Noam’s mother, Sarit, explains, “I thought about Shimon Peres’ efforts for peace with our neighbors and realized I was making the right decision” in giving consent.  The transplant centre arranged for her to speak to Peres.  He supported their decision, saying, “It’s one of the most moving contributions to peace.  It shatters all prejudices.”

Yakoub’s father thanked the family profusely and heaped blessings upon them for their kindness at this difficult time.  Health Minister Yael German also expressed appreciation, saying,  “Noam’s parents are noble and inspiring people. Their donation is a source of pride and an example of humanity and kindness. “

The transplant took place at Schneider Children’s Medical Centre in Petach Tikvah.  Yakoub is recovering there and is expected to be released soon.
